Like Farming - Not All You Like Is What It Is

Only a few people will really believe warnings such as the one we're about to quote. It goes like this:

Indianapolis – June 19, 2015 – There may be a very touching story about a little girl who is suffering from cancer. The beautifully written story pulls at your heartstrings. You may be asked to re-post or share this story. But the fact may be, the little girl in the photo may not even be sick or is unaware that her photo is even being used. It may very well be a tactic being used called Facebook Like-Farming.

Like-Farmers create a Facebook page to lure people into liking or sharing the page. Once the page creators have piled up hundreds of likes and shares, they may strip the page and promote something else, such as products that they will receive commissions for selling. They may also sell the page and information that was collected from the “likes” with a more direct threat of gaining access in an attempt to gather credit card numbers that may be stored for certain Facebook apps, passwords or other personal information.

New pages created from gathered data may be used to spread malicious software to compromise data or spread malware. The best approach is to think before you like. If you encounter an issue, you are encouraged to report it to Facebook immediately for their review. You can do so simply by clicking on the down arrow in the right hand corner of the post, and select report post.

Two years ago on this very same month, a press release was published immediately warning people of an online scam proliferating in Facebook. Attached is the screenshot:
